Alaska Silver Salmon Fishing with Fisherman's Choice Charters
Alaska Silver Salmon start filtering into the Little Susitna River and Deshka River in mid July and into the Talkeetna River in early August. These explosive silver bullets are virtually flashes of lightning, as they burst out of the water like misguided missiles. When you come upon a school of these dynamic 6 to 18 pound silver salmon, hold on and watch them perform! It's non-stop fishing action until the cooler is full and silver salmon fishing limits are filled.
Fisherman's Choice Charters fishes the Alaska Silver Salmon all the way through September. Alaska Department of Fish and Game set up the weir and began monitoring the Alaska Salmon fishing on the Deshka River here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (Mat-Su Valley) on July 15, 2011. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game calculated Alaska Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) escapement at a 7,508 fish before pulling the weir from the cold water on September 6th, 2011.
Alaska Fish and Game also counted Alaska Silver Salmon on the Little Susitna River from August 3rd through September 28th. 4,826
Alaska Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) passed through the weir on the Little Susitna.
This made it really nice for our vacationing fishermen as well as the local Alaska Salmon fisherman. With both fly fishing rods and spin fishing gear, the bait fishing opening for Silver Salmon on the Little Susitna River on August 6th sent a wealth of fishing clients home with sore forearms!!
As for the Talkeetna River here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley there is no count taken. However, the Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) run was much larger than normal.
The Talkeetna River also came to life as the Alaska Chum Salmon fishing run was stronger than ever as well. Though not a great eating fish, the Chum Salmon are larger in size and will "bulldog" you all the way to the bank.
This also made for some great Rainbow Trout fishing as the lack of Silver Salmon eggs in the water made for a hungry and aggressive Rainbow Trout!
