Alaska Silver Salmon, also known as coho salmon, 30-90 minutes north of Anchorage, Alaska, start filtering into the Knik River, Little Susitna River and Deshka River in mid-July, and into the Talkeetna River in early August. These explosive silver bullets are virtual flashes of lightning, as they burst out of the water like misguided missiles. When you come upon a school of these dynamic 6 to 18 pound silver salmon, hold on and watch them perform! Silver salmon (also known as Coho salmon) fishing with AK Fisherman’s Choice Charters is non-stop fishing action!
Fisherman’s Choice Charters fishes the Alaska silver salmon all the way through September. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game set up the weir and began monitoring the silver salmon on the Deshka River here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (Mat-Su Valley) on July of 2023. The ADFG calculated the silver (Coho) salmon escapement at 5,368 fish before pulling the weir from the cold water. ADFG also counted Alaska Silvers on the Little Susitna River from July 17th through August 31st. Silver salmon from the tide waters of the Little Susitna River measured at 10,765 silvers passing through the weir on the Little Susitna. This made it really nice for our vacationing fishermen as well as the local Alaska salmon fisherman. With both fly fishing rods and spin fishing gear, the bait fishing opening for silver salmon on the Little Susitna River on August 6th sent a wealth of fishing clients home with sore forearms!!
