Ray took us on a Deshka River Chinook Salmon trip in late May and it was great! Although we had to get to the river pick-up point at 5:00 AM it was for good reason. You can’t fish until 6:00AM and many of the guides focus on a 300′ x 100′ honey hole to give their clients the best chance. Ray got us to the spot after about a 30 minute run and anchored the flat bottom boat on the bow and stern to give us the perfect casting zone. At 6:00 AM we began casting and retrieving a spinning bait after 5 casts my wife hooked up a screamer ripping the line of her reel. We had to pull the anchors and chase the fish for almost 100 yards. Everything was happening so fast but it was clear our guide Ray was well prepared and been through this drill many times before. She ended up with a 45 lb beauty and Ray quietly drove the boat back down the river to the place we were and I looked at my watch and it was only 6:15 AM. A little later that day I caught mine about an hour later, a 18 lb Chinook. Ray did everything possible to make sure we had a good time and he knew when to coach, when to compliment a cast, and when to just let the clients enjoy the quiet beauty of the Deshka river. We caught our limit and we had more action than any other boat on the river that morning. We saw eagles and big Kings jumping which made it wilderness type adventure only 90 minutes from Anchorage. On the way back up the river Ray pointed out some of the key land marks and talked about his wildlife observations over the past week which really made the trip enjoyable. The only recommendation I would make is for clients to wear good ankle support boots/shoes because there is no dock at the launch point. Being rustic Alaska it’s a steep embankment which you have to navigate carefully, especially us old folk. Ray was an outstanding personable guide who I look forward to booking with again in the future.
A great fishing company!
I have been fishing with Ray and Terri for years! The guides they employ are tolerant, well-educated in fishing in Alaska and focused on the client. They will help if you need it and offer guidance if you just need a bit of assistance getting back into fishing. I; myself fish for silvers annually with Fisherman’s Choice and have NEVER had any issue. If any client feels that they have any issue, Terri and Ray are all over it! Guides are also tolerant and focused on making sure that everyone catches fish, even their shorter guests (kids)!
Fishing in Alaska, as with most places (unless you are fishing in a barrel) is NEVER guaranteed, but Ray and Terri along with their guides are interested in giving their guests the best shot, equipment and advice for catching. Not all fish may be taken, since there are several species in Alaskan waters. Most are great to eat, but some, just are not “on the table” material.
I have nothing negative to say about about my years of experience with Fisherman’s Choice, so don’t hesitate to contact them for your reservation while in Alaska!
Guide was very attentive for slow fishing day
We went back in 8/24/12 for a half day trip. Greg was our guide and told us the weather was a bit cold but we’ll get what we can. He was very attentive the whole trip, when we did not catch anything at the first spot he moved us to another where we got bites while others in the area were not. While I only got one, my husband got two, and the other person with us got one, Greg never stopped trying the whole time we were out there fishing. I know it’s hit or miss so we were disappointed that it wasn’t a good day, but we still got to go with our 3 silver salmon. Then Greg told us if we have time there was a restaurant that would cook our fish for $10, we went (I have since forgotten the name of the restaurant) and they charged exactly what he said, plus they gave us salad, and sides. It was cooked perfectly and we enjoyed our meal thanks to Greg’s suggestion…which is why they get 4 stars from us. We are going again this August, and I plan on booking with them again.
Great trip
We went on a half day trip on 6/18/14. Jason was a great guide. He worked hard to put us on the fish with the right tackle. Three out of the five on our boat landed kings from a middle of the road salmon run. Eagles everywhere….beautiful river (Deshka) … an all around great day
What a blast!
We booked an early morning trip and had our limit by 7 a.m. Jerry and Cali were great guides. I’d definitely recommend Fishermans Choice.
What a great time!
Jerry and Kali were awesome, They brought us to the fish. You cannot make them bite though but we caught lots of salmon just not the good tasting ones though but it was still well worth the money. We had a blast.
Great!
This was a great trip on the Talkeetna River! They supplied all the gear, had a great guide (Greg) who took us to the perfect spot where we caught our limit of Salmon (Silvers) would definitely do it again!
Can’t wait to get back to “our” Alaska and friends at Fisherman’s Choice
Terri is too honest, but our family will fish with her always. When AK Fish & Game closed King season prior to our arrival in Alaska, Terri laid out our options and we had a fantastic trip in spite of not being able to land any Kings. We fished in Big Lake and caught beautiful trout , a large Dolly Varden and had amazing wildlife/Denali views. The next day our 16 year old fanatic fisherwoman daughter caught a pink on the Little Su and had the time of her life with guides Greg and Jerry. Can’t wait to get back to “our” Alaska and friends at “Fisherman’s Choice”.
Will keep coming back
I met Ray and “World Famous” Terri at the outdoor fair in Palmer. The fair is so small that if you blink, you will miss half the vendors. I was lucky not to miss Ray and Terri’s booth. There were so many fishing services. I have used their services twice since then. Ray’s loves to fish and really enjoys being out there with you. Terri is always great on the phone. I have been fishing around the world: Chile, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, Alaska, Montana, Macedonia, France, England, Australia, etc., etc. Terri is the first fishing guide to say to me, “Wait, the fishing isn’t great right now.” What kind of crazy guide says that? I tell you what kind, one who loves their customers and wants them to keep coming back. I WILL. If you plan on fishing in Alaska, DON’T just go to the Kenai, although that’s great. Fish the Mat-Su Valley and be sure to call Fisherman’s Choice!!
